A modern day search begins here on the internet but the quest to find a path is an ancient one. As it was then you’ll find you have two kinds of questions, speakable and unspeakable.
The speakable questions can be asked and answered, i.e.; what is the philosophy of Aikido? How often do you offer class? What is your teacher’s background?
The unspeakable questions are impossible to form in words and wouldn’t be answerable anyway. You will have to use other senses to pick up on the feeling of a school, if the art practiced there is compelling to you, and what qualities you sense in those practicing it.
At the beginning what we read or say to each other can be interesting and helpful in deciding what art to practice and which school to join. Eventually we discover it’s what we have difficulty saying that make up the reasons we love the art, its dojo, and the community that has formed around it. It’s in this wordless realm that we find the strength and conviction to stick with it.
The best advice from the old days is still true today, keep an open mind and start by assuming nothing. You may find that Bucks County Aikido is the place for you. It all depends on what you are looking for.
